Wine area of Terra Alta

To the West of the province of Tarragona, between the river Ebro and the limits of Zaragoza and Teruel, where low mountains, wavy areas and valleys run up with theprovince of Teruel, we can find the wine area known as Terra Alta (Highlands). This Denomination of Origin covers 12 municipalities, in which we can find La Pobla de Massaluca.

Protected by the Denomination of Origin Terra Alta, we find a cultivated surface of approximately 8.000 ha of vineyard, out of which, approximately 240 ha belong to the members of Caterra.

The majority of the extension is composed of smallholdings, with an average of 5 ha for estate, though there are a few slightly large, ranging around 20 ha.

As its name indicates, Terra Alta, (Highlands), the vineyards and olive groves are situated on a beautiful hilled landscape which has been portrayed in Picasso’s works as he used to spend his summers in the area. The whole area is delimited by a mountainous system that separates it from the River Ebro as it crosses the Catalonian territory.
